Open Dental vs. Archy in 2026: Which Practice Management Software Fits Your Practice?
Open Dental and Archy are both practice management systems for dental offices, but they come from opposite philosophies.
Open Dental is the long-established, highly customizable system with a low base fee and a huge ecosystem of integrations. Archy is a newer, browser-based platform that bundles scheduling, charting, payments, texting, imaging, and AI tools into one product.
Neither is the right answer for every practice. Here is how they compare.

Pricing: a low base fee vs. an all-in platform
Open Dental's headline number is hard to beat. Its fee covers the software, updates, and phone support for all computers at a location, and it drops to a reduced rate after the first year.
But that is not the whole bill. Open Dental practices usually add:
- Server hardware or a hosted cloud package
- IT support
- Optional eServices, such as the eServices bundle
- Third-party tools for texting, payments, phones, and AI
Archy's pricing is higher up front, but it bundles unlimited users, providers, claim submissions, eligibility checks, and texting. AI Scribe, AI Voice Perio, AI imaging, and other suites are priced separately.
The honest comparison is total cost: Open Dental plus hosting, IT, and the tools you add, against Archy's platform fee plus whichever suites you choose.
Hosting and IT: server vs. browser
Open Dental is designed around a server in your office or a hosted environment. That gives you control and strong performance, but someone has to manage backups, updates, and security.
Archy runs in a browser, so there is no server to maintain. For practices without dedicated IT support, that can be a significant advantage. The tradeoff is dependence on a single vendor and your internet connection.
Built-in features and AI
Archy's pitch is that most of what a practice needs is in one place: charting, imaging, payments, texting, forms, a patient portal, and AI features for notes, perio charting, and imaging review. Several of the AI features are sold as separate suites.
Open Dental covers the core of practice management and leaves much of the rest to integrations. That is a strength if you want to choose the best tool for each job and a burden if you want fewer vendors.
Flexibility and integrations
Open Dental has long been popular with practices that want to customize workflows, reports, and data. Its large integration ecosystem means most engagement, imaging, and phone vendors support it.
Archy is more opinionated. You get a cohesive experience, with less room to swap components. If your practice has specific tools it needs to keep, check compatibility before you move.
Switching costs and migration
Moving your practice management system affects the schedule, charts, ledgers, insurance data, and staff routines. Archy describes a guided conversion process, but any migration takes planning and a transition period.
Before switching either direction, ask:
- Which data is converted, and which stays behind?
- How long will the schedule and billing be affected?
- What training is included?
- Can we export our data if we leave later?
Which one fits your practice?
Open Dental may fit if:
- You want a low base fee and strong control over customization and reporting
- You have IT support, or a partner who handles hosting
- You want to pick best-of-breed tools for texting, phones, payments, and AI
Archy may fit if:
- You want a browser-based system with little IT overhead
- You prefer built-in payments, texting, and AI in one vendor relationship
- You are opening a new practice and qualify for the new-practice rate
Whichever you choose, the front desk still needs help
Your practice management system is where records live. It does not, by itself, answer the phone after hours, call back a missed lead, or fill tomorrow's open slot.
Operaitor works with Open Dental, adding VoIP, an AI receptionist, AI outreach, and practice analytics around your existing system. If you are weighing a switch, ask whether the tools you rely on will still connect afterward.
